Recent trends in the business workplace environment have seen a focus on employee well being and making the workplace an area of innovation.
It used to be that a traditional office space was situated in a building owned by the business and offered the standard office business environment to its employees. This includes lines of cubicle space with each cubicle equipped with a computer, phone, and possibly a printer although most of the time office workers shared printers that were strung together on a network.
However, the focus of the business environment has slowly evolved into open space projects, in which employees are encouraged to converse and talk to each other to encourage innovative ideas and growth. In more modern companies, the business environment is designed with a bit more feng shui in mind, and open office areas so that employees can see each other and therefore enjoy coming to work every day.
Instead of isolating employees, research has shown that interactivity at work helps increase overall employee productivity and encourages the growth of new ideas. It also helps to bolster growth and employee happiness because isolation can lead to anger and resentment as competition grows among employees leading to unfortunate events.
The office environment itself has also changed as most businesses do not own their own space, but instead invest in office share buildings or even office share floors. Many businesses take the principle of co-interaction to the extreme and lease out portions of a building so that employees can interact with others in other related companies for an even larger open exchange of ideas.
